Orlim residents protest mega project Published on: April 6, 2012 - 00:57 More in: Goa News MARGAO: Over 50 Orlim villagers gathered and signed a memorandum protesting the second mega project, approved by the TCP Department. Construction licence for the project has been issued by the panchayat body, it is learnt. The residents have been protesting against the project in a low-lying area, for which land filing has been carried out. The villagers are demanding that the site inspection be taken up on a priority. They are also demanding construction of suitable storm water drains on a priority basis and suitable setbacks maintained from the main road leading to Cavelossim. The villagers led by Kim Miranda and Shanti Fortes last week had submitted a memorandum on Orlim mega projects to the Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, when he had visited Salcete to inspect the Sinquetim-Benaulim Bridge. Villagers have also asked for capping of the well used for the construction activity of the said mega project. Incidentally, the villagers have pointed out that the builder brings in a water tanker everyday and the same is driven off without emptying since water from the nearby well is being used and the villagers are facing an acute water shortage. The villagers have taken a strong exception to “this hoodwinking by the builder and total lack of interest by the elected representatives of the panchayat towards the welfare of the village”. The construction in survey no 194 of the village has been protested against and subsequently since 2010, the villagers have taken resolutions against the project since water and electricity supply in the village has been irregular. The villagers have now submitted a memorandum to the Town and Country Planning Department to stall the project.
